KP Advisor exposes Punjab’s healthcare collapse as 20 children perish in Pakpattan, contrasts with KP’s swift flood response accountability
PESHAWAR:Advisor to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Information, Barrister Dr. Saif, has urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to focus on addressing the healthcare crisis in her province rather than politicizing the recent natural disaster in Swat. He expressed deep concern over the reported deaths of at least 20 children at the District Headquarters Hospital in Pakpattan due to inadequate medical facilities and the absence of timely treatment.
Barrister Dr. Saif stated that this tragic incident highlights serious shortcomings in Punjab’s healthcare system. He noted that, despite the gravity of the situation, no action has been taken against any responsible officials in Punjab, which he termed a clear case of administrative negligence.
In comparison, he said, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, responded promptly to the Swat incident by suspending six officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioners, and the District Rescue Officer. A formal inquiry committee has been constituted, and investigations are underway to determine responsibility and ensure appropriate disciplinary measures.
Dr. Saif further stated that public hospitals across Punjab are facing shortages of essential medicines, medical equipment, and trained staff. He called on the Punjab government to prioritize healthcare reforms and ensure that necessary resources are provided to prevent further loss of life.
He concluded by emphasizing that governance should be focused on addressing public issues effectively, particularly in sectors as critical as healthcare.
